God Of War’s Laufey Collector’s Edition Leaves One Important Thing Out: The Game

Sony has revealed the God of War Laufey Collector’s Edition, a $150 merchandise bundle that notably does not include the game itself—physical or digital. The collector’s box went up for preorder through PlayStation Direct with limited stock available.

The bundle contains three primary collectibles: an eight-inch light-up Faye statue featuring characters from the game, a 51-card illustrated Oracle deck, and a mini art book showcasing the game’s characters, creatures, and environments. The Faye statue is particularly detailed, depicting Faye, Phranque, and Rue fighting against Begtse’s soldiers, with Phranque illuminating when the statue is connected to a USB power source. All items are housed in special collector’s edition packaging.

The decision to exclude the game from a $150 collector’s edition has drawn criticism online and represents a growing trend in the industry. Grand Theft Auto 6 recently launched a $399.99 collector’s box that similarly excludes the game, requiring purchasers to buy the title separately. This approach has frustrated consumers who expect major releases to be included in premium collector’s offerings.

Santa Monica Studio confirmed that God of War Laufey remains on track for its 2027 release date. The game has already generated considerable controversy, primarily due to the protagonist being Faye rather than series mainstay Kratos. The title also attracted attention when a Last of Us director accidentally posted critique; the director subsequently apologized to the team.

The collector’s edition’s exclusion of the game itself reflects broader industry trends toward monetizing merchandise separately from the base product.
