Japan is getting an exclusive Midnight Black PlayStation 5 next month, but there’s still hope for the rest of the world
Sony has announced a new Midnight Black variant of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, launching exclusively in Japan on November 19, 2026—the same day as Grand Theft Auto 6. Priced at ¥55,000 (approximately $350 USD or £263), the console undercuts the current $599 PS5 Digital Edition pricing significantly. However, this model comes with region-locking restrictions: the console language is locked to Japanese and it can only be used with PlayStation Network accounts based in Japan, preventing international purchases or usage outside the region.
The Midnight Black design extends to the bundled DualSense controller, giving the console a sleek aesthetic distinct from existing white models. This variant is based on the region-locked PS5 variant that Sony originally launched in Japan in November 2025.
While the announcement is Japan-exclusive for now, reports suggest there remains hope for global availability, as the aggressive pricing and visual refresh could theoretically appeal to international markets. The price point and product refresh have been noted as potentially record-breaking for hardware sales if released worldwide, highlighting the disconnect between Japan’s regional pricing and global PS5 costs. Sony has not confirmed plans to expand availability beyond Japan at this time.
