Mini Review: Resident Evil 3 (Switch 2) - An Impressive Port Of A Subpar Remake
Resident Evil 3 Remake has launched on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing Capcom’s 2020 reimagining of the classic survival horror title to the company’s handheld console. The game focuses on S.T.A.R.S. officer Jill Valentine as she grapples with the aftermath of the original game’s events, set roughly contemporaneously with Resident Evil 2.
The original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) was designed as a spin-off rather than a mainline title, but the 2020 remake gave developers an opportunity to completely rethink Jill’s story. However, the remake has earned a reputation as the weakest entry among Capcom’s recent Resident Evil reimaginings. Unlike the Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes, which expanded upon their source material, RE3 introduced notable cutbacks in environmental design, campaign structure, and the behavior of the iconic antagonist Nemesis.
Despite these shortcomings, the game remains a worthwhile experience for horror fans. The campaign progresses at a brisk pace, completing in approximately five to six hours. The Switch 2 port appears to be technically accomplished, with reviewers suggesting the handheld platform may represent an ideal home for this particular title. While not considered among the franchise’s high points, Resident Evil 3 Remake still offers engaging horror gameplay for those looking to experience Jill’s story on the go.
