Can you beat General Lothaire in Valor Mortis?
General Lothaire, dubbed “The Eagle-Bearer,” is the first boss encounter in the soulslike game Valor Mortis. Players first meet this formidable opponent at the end of Chapter 1, though defeating him at this stage is intentionally difficult. The boss encounter becomes mandatory at the end of Chapter 2, where players must triumph to progress.
Defeating General Lothaire grants significant rewards: the General’s Catalyst Clot item, 10,000 catalysts, and the Torn-Banner achievement. The fight presents a unique challenge in that players normally have only one attempt—death triggers a cutscene featuring the character Lucjan, who rescues the player and provides lore exposition. However, players have discovered a workaround: exiting the game immediately upon death via ALT+F4 allows them to reload at the boss arena entrance for another attempt.
To successfully defeat General Lothaire, players should prioritize boosting endurance, equipping the best available early-game amber, and maintaining courage. The boss is described as significantly more challenging than previous enemies encountered at locations like the stone quarry, making it a demanding early-game obstacle. The fight is designed as a classic soulslike encounter where victory isn’t guaranteed, and multiple attempts may be necessary despite the game’s intended one-shot mechanics.
