Xbox Forms Labs Group for Vibe-Coded Game Ports

Microsoft has announced Xbox Labs, a new initiative led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and headed by CTO Scott Van Vliet. The small team of game makers, engineers, and scientists will focus on rapid development and testing of emerging technologies that extend Xbox’s reach to new players and platforms.

The announcement comes in response to a recent explosion of AI-powered game ports and decompilations. Over the past month, retro games have been rapidly ported to PCs, phones, and consoles using AI-assisted “vibe coding” tools, with high-profile examples including a 94fps browser version of Halo: Combat Evolved. While Asha Sharma stopped short of explicitly mentioning “AI” or “generative AI” in her announcement, she acknowledged that recent innovations “challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games.”

Xbox Labs will pursue several specific goals aligned with Asha Sharma’s broader vision of reaching 1 billion players daily. These include getting Xbox and Xbox 360 games playable in web browsers, improving backward compatibility for older titles, implementing new compatibility layers for platforms like Apple Silicon and WebGL, and exploring how AI-powered mods and reverse engineering can expand game accessibility. The team will “build in the open,” iterate based on user feedback, and measure success by increased player engagement and creation.

The initiative represents Microsoft’s strategic decision to embrace rather than restrict the emerging ecosystem of decompiled and recompiled games, positioning Xbox as a forward-thinking platform willing to experiment with transformative technologies.
