Xbox Is Testing A New Streak Feature That Could Make Gaming Feel (More) Like A Chore
Xbox is testing a new streak feature on its console that encourages users to engage with their platform on a regular basis. The feature, currently being tested through the Xbox Insider program, was spotted by journalist Stephen Totilo and shows a prominent streak counter on users’ Xbox dashboards and profile menus.
The streak system activates when a user plays on their Xbox at least three days within a single week. The UI displays a checkmark for each day the user signed in that week, with empty circles representing days they didn’t (or haven’t yet occurred). Once a streak is established, a flame symbol appears alongside a number indicating how many consecutive weeks the user has maintained their streak.
This represents a more prominent implementation of engagement mechanics Microsoft has previously tested in the Xbox mobile app and through Game Pass. Some observers have characterized the feature as using subtle psychological manipulation to encourage continued console usage, raising concerns about whether the design is intended to make gaming feel more like an obligation than entertainment.
The feature remains experimental and hasn’t been officially announced by Microsoft. It’s unclear whether the streak counter will become a permanent feature or how it might be further developed.
