Anbernic’s next dual-screen handheld could replace your aging Nintendo 3DS

Anbernic has announced the RG DDS (Dream Dual Screen), a new dual-screen handheld designed as a modern replacement for the aging Nintendo 3DS. The company released video footage demonstrating the device running emulated 3DS, Xbox, and PS3 games. Unlike the original 3DS with its glasses-free 3D display, the RG DDS features standard screens optimized for 3DS aspect ratios and dimensions, though without the 3D functionality.

The RG DDS represents Anbernic’s latest expansion in the dual-screen handheld market, following earlier releases of the RG DS and RG DS Plus, which targeted classic Nintendo DS emulation. The new device includes a faster processor than its predecessors to handle more demanding emulation workloads. While competitors like Ayaneo have produced dual-screen handhelds for several years, this announcement marks Anbernic’s specific entry into the 3DS emulation space.

The release reflects growing demand from vintage gaming enthusiasts for modern handheld emulation devices that allow players to preserve and enjoy older games without relying on aging original hardware. By targeting the 3DS form factor and game library, Anbernic is capitalizing on nostalgia and the practical appeal of current-generation processing power in a familiar handheld design.
