GTA 6 Leaks Are Still Coming, Rockstar Labels The 2022 Hack “Weirdly Invasive”
Rockstar Games has publicly reacted to the ongoing Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks that began in 2022 following a phishing attack. The incident exposed dozens of unfinished gameplay clips and explicit content intended never to reach the public.
Aaron Garbut, a lead developer at Rockstar North, described the experience in a Bloomberg interview as deeply uncomfortable and invasive. Using the metaphor of someone “wading through your dirty washing,” Garbut explained that seeing early developmental work publicly shared felt like an intrusion into the creative process. He emphasized how difficult it was emotionally to encounter unfinished material that was “never supposed to see” public release.
Rockstar and publisher Take-Two eventually tracked down and pursued the hacker responsible for the original 2022 breach. However, leaks have continued to resurface, with the CyberLeek account recently posting additional gameplay footage and claiming it could be the final leak. The leaked material has included explicit content that Rockstar never intended for public distribution.
The incident highlights the challenges major game studios face in protecting unreleased work and the emotional toll such breaches take on development teams working through experimental phases before official reveals.
