Halo’s co-creator wrote a novel about AI taking over the world

Jason Jones, the co-creator of the sci-fi video game franchises Halo and Destiny, has written a novel centered on an artificial intelligence takeover of the world. The manuscript, which was presented to author Margaret Stohl—a collaborator from their time at Bungie—in 2019, takes the form of an oral history documenting the AI uprising from the perspectives of approximately 100 characters located across 40 countries.

Upon reviewing the work, Stohl recognized the project’s potential to extend beyond a single novel format. Jones’s vision encompasses an ambitious multimedia plan built around the book An Oral History of Humanity’s Final Invention. The narrative structure positions the story as a collection of testimonies and accounts from individuals experiencing the fictional AI event globally, allowing for diverse perspectives on the same catastrophic scenario.

The project represents Jones’s foray into long-form narrative fiction outside of interactive gaming, though his extensive experience crafting the lore and worlds of major gaming franchises suggests a sophisticated approach to world-building and storytelling. The multimedia expansion of this concept indicates plans to bring the oral history format to other media platforms beyond the novel itself.
