Jeff Kaplan Says Separation From Overwatch Was “Clinical”: ” I Never Go Back”
Jeff Kaplan, the longtime director and public face of Overwatch, has provided candid reflections on his departure from Blizzard Entertainment in April 2021 after nearly two decades with the company. In an interview, Kaplan revealed that he has not played Overwatch since leaving, describing his relationship with the game as a “clinical separation” and stating emphatically, “I never go back.”
Despite being a self-described introvert, Kaplan became the visible representative of Overwatch during his tenure, regularly interacting with the community. However, he acknowledged that serving as the public face of the game came at a “personal cost,” subjecting him to toxicity from players. He emphasized that he never sought the spotlight but felt the game required a human face for community engagement and communication.
Since departing Blizzard, Kaplan has transitioned to independent game development, working on a project titled The Legend of California. This shift to indie development has proven “humbling,” as he notes that industry peers have largely ignored his outreach efforts—a stark contrast to his previous status as an industry icon when associated with one of gaming’s most successful franchises.
