Duke Nukem 3D level designer Richard “Levelord” Gray dies aged 68
Richard “Levelord” Gray, the legendary level designer best known for crafting some of gaming’s most iconic spaces, has passed away at age 68. His death was announced by Apogee Entertainment on social media, with the company paying tribute to his “legendary work on Duke Nukem 3D.”
Gray’s career in game design began with Duke Nukem 3D, the groundbreaking 1996 first-person shooter that defined a generation of gaming. His level design was instrumental in the game’s critical and commercial success. Among his most memorable creations was the “You’re not supposed to be here” Easter egg, a clever hidden message that became an iconic element of the game and a testament to his creative approach to level design.
After Duke Nukem 3D’s release, Gray co-founded Hipnotic Interactive (later renamed Ritual Entertainment), where he continued designing levels for some of the industry’s most significant titles. His credits at Ritual Entertainment included Quake: Scourge of Armagon, the action game Sin, Star Trek: Elite Force 2, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and 25 to Life. This diverse portfolio demonstrated his versatility across different genres and franchises.
Gray’s influence extended far beyond the games he directly worked on, as his design philosophy established standards for first-person shooter level creation that remained relevant for decades. The gaming community has remembered him for both his technical skills and his creative vision in crafting immersive worlds for millions of players.
