Magic: The Gathering Is Officially Reprinting a Powerful $18 Card for the First Time in 20 Years
Magic: The Gathering players have reason to celebrate as Wizards of the Coast announced a highly anticipated reprint. Soul Spike, a powerful black instant card originally printed in 2006’s Coldsnap expansion, is being reprinted for the first time in two decades. The card has become increasingly valuable in the competitive Magic community, commanding prices around $18 on the secondary market due to its competitive applications and the scarcity created by the lack of reprints.
The reprint was announced on October 13 as part of a new Secret Lair drop called “怪異学校 — Strange School,” inspired by the Reality Fracture theme. The special collection features five mono-black cards showcasing manga-inspired artwork created by Japanese artists and illustrators, giving the cards a distinctly macabre aesthetic.
Soul Spike stands out as the most prominent inclusion in this drop, though the collection also features several other valuable reprints that will likely appeal to collectors and competitive players alike. The Secret Lair drop will be available in two editions: a non-foil version priced at $29.99 and a foil version at $39.99.
This reprint represents a significant moment for Magic players who have been seeking alternative copies of Soul Spike at more accessible price points. Secret Lair drops have become Wizards of the Coast’s primary mechanism for releasing special printings of sought-after cards with unique artwork and premium presentation. The combination of competitive utility, scarcity of previous printings, and the appeal of the Japanese manga-inspired artwork makes this particular reprint of particular interest to the Magic community.
