Over the Hill’s off-roading simulation winches you in with a more laid-back take than SnowRunner’s, but it’ll still bite careless drivers

Over the Hill is a new off-roading simulation game developed by Funselektor, the studio behind acclaimed driving titles Art of Rally and Absolute Drift. The game takes a more relaxed, laid-back approach to the genre compared to punishing simulators like SnowRunner, though it remains challenging enough to punish careless driving.

The game features diverse environments including the cold Canadian hills and the harsh Algerian desert, providing varied terrain for players to navigate with their 4x4 vehicles. Players control various off-road capable machines, with the Unimog mentioned as one available vehicle equipped with advanced German engineering for handling challenging terrain.

While the game adopts a chilled, “vibesy” aesthetic compared to the brutal difficulty of traditional off-roading sims, it still demands respect from players. The simulation maintains enough complexity and difficulty to catch drivers who aren’t paying attention or making poor tactical decisions about vehicle handling and terrain navigation.

According to Rock Paper Shotgun’s review, Over the Hill successfully blends accessibility with depth, offering newcomers to the off-roading genre a less intimidating entry point while still providing meaningful challenge for experienced players.
