Rockstar’s next game won’t take eight years to make: “The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during GTA 6 will allow us to do things more quickly”
Rockstar Games has reassured fans that its next title won’t require the eight-year development cycle that Grand Theft Auto 6 underwent. In comments to Bloomberg, studio leadership emphasized that the foundational work completed during GTA 6’s production will accelerate future game development.
The studio has significantly scaled its operations to support GTA 6’s creation. Since Red Dead Redemption 2’s launch in 2018, when Rockstar employed 2,441 staff, the company has more than doubled its workforce to 4,711 employees spread across 12 offices as of 2026. Of these, 4,020 work in development and quality assurance roles, while 690 handle publishing responsibilities.
According to Phil Hooker, co-head of development, the groundwork established during GTA 6’s lengthy production will provide advantages for subsequent projects. “The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” Hooker stated. Development heads also indicated they plan to “go more sideways than upwards” with future titles, suggesting an approach focused on iterating within established frameworks rather than continuously expanding scope.
GTA 6 launches in November 2026, concluding a 13-year gap since Grand Theft Auto V’s 2013 release. However, Rockstar has made similar efficiency promises previously. When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, the studio expressed confidence in accelerating GTA 6’s development, yet the game still required eight years. Whether the expanded team, improved tools, and technological foundation will actually translate to meaningfully shorter development cycles remains to be seen.
