Review: Tales of Eternia Remastered (PS5) - Classic PlayStation RPG Shows Its Age
Bandai Namco continues its initiative to bring classic Tales of games to modern platforms with Tales of Eternia Remastered on PS5. Following the commercial success of 2021’s Tales of Arise, the publisher has been reviving several entries from the long-running Japanese RPG franchise to introduce them to a new generation while serving longtime fans.
The company has already successfully remastered several titles from the series. Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Berseria have all made the transition to modern platforms and, according to the reviewer, have aged reasonably well. These remasters have demonstrated that the franchise’s legacy titles can find audiences in the current generation, even as gaming technology and player expectations have evolved.
Tales of Eternia Remastered presents a different case, however. As a classic PlayStation-era RPG, the game carries more visible signs of its age compared to some of the more recent remasters in the series. The review’s title—suggesting that Eternia “shows its age”—reflects how the gap between these older titles and contemporary standards in game design, graphics, and quality-of-life features has become increasingly pronounced.
This remaster campaign reflects a broader industry trend of reviving beloved franchises from previous console generations. Whether Eternia’s dated presentation will resonate with modern players remains to be seen, though the success of earlier remasters in the line suggests there is still appetite for these classic adventures.
