Valve Officially Calls Time on Index VR Headset, Sells Remaining Stock at a Discount
Valve has officially discontinued the Index VR headset, marking the end of its production cycle. The company is clearing remaining inventory with a 20% discount on the headset, controllers, and associated hardware. Despite the discount, the full Index kit—including headset, both controllers, and HTC-made base stations—still costs approximately £1,027, making it less compelling than Valve’s newer alternative.
The discontinuation comes as Valve’s newer Steam Frame VR headset has become the company’s primary focus. Launched last month, the Steam Frame offers superior specifications and capabilities compared to the Index, drawing strong market interest despite its premium pricing and current supply constraints. Valve reported that demand for the Steam Frame is robust enough that pre-orders now extend into 2027.
The Index will remain fully supported through Steam and SteamVR, ensuring existing users can continue playing their VR titles. However, the shift in Valve’s hardware strategy represents a clear pivot toward the Steam Frame as the company’s flagship VR platform. The discounted Index stock represents Valve’s final push to clear older inventory before fully committing resources to next-generation hardware.
