Review: Witcher 3 Remastered on PS5 and Series X/S: A Comprehensive Free Revision with Modern Visuals, Fixed Performance and Some Lingering Issues
The Witcher 3 Remastered, a free upgrade for owners of CD Projekt Red’s acclaimed 2015 RPG, has launched across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S with a comprehensive visual and performance overhaul. Nearly 11 years after the original release, the remaster aims to bring the venerable title up to modern standards; however, the launch proved problematic, with reports of visual inconsistencies, frequent crashes, and performance dropping below 60fps in various scenarios.
Following critical feedback, CD Projekt Red released Patch 5.01 to address pressing issues, focusing on frame rate improvements and stability. Digital Foundry’s testing revealed that while the remaster shows promise across supported platforms, the PS5 Pro emerges as the clear console performance leader, delivering superior frame rates and visual consistency compared to the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X/S variants.
Despite improvements from Patch 5.01, Digital Foundry’s analysis indicates the remaster still requires further optimization work. The free upgrade means existing players can experience enhanced visuals and modernized gameplay without additional cost, but performance stability and frame rate consistency remain areas where the title hasn’t fully reached its potential on current-generation hardware.
