Caves of Qud: Diaspora breaks new ground by being the first early access DLC release on Steam

Caves of Qud, the acclaimed science-fantasy roguelike, will expand in December with Diaspora, its first DLC—entering early access in a landmark first for Steam. The base game concluded a nine-year early access period with its 1.0 release in 2024. Developer Freehold Games is now taking an unusual step by releasing DLC to early access, marking an unprecedented move for the platform.

Diaspora’s headline feature allows players to experience the game as sapient plants and animals, including playable trees and modified canine characters. This significantly expands the game’s already extensive roster of playable species and taps into what makes Caves of Qud distinctive: its remarkable density of mechanics and interactions enabling wildly diverse playthroughs. Characters can evolve into unexpected forms like four-armed psionic turtles wielding blood-fueled weapons.

The decision to release DLC in early access reflects the expansion’s complexity and ambition. Rather than launching a complete product, Freehold Games is leveraging Steam’s early access framework to gather community feedback during development—the same approach that shaped the base game’s evolution since its 2015 early access debut.

Caves of Qud has been recognized as one of the finest roguelikes available, praised for its intricate simulation systems and baroque science-fantasy setting. With Diaspora introducing new playable species and their associated mechanics, the expansion promises to deepen an already labyrinthine experience and offer fresh approaches to character development and world exploration.
