Halo: Combat Evolved is running on Nintendo 64 with split-screen multiplayer

A fan project called Halo-64 successfully brings the classic first-person shooter Halo: Combat Evolved to Nintendo 64, complete with split-screen multiplayer and additional game modes. The port includes Firefight mode, AI-controlled bots, and all 13 original multiplayer maps, delivering a functional version of the early 2000s Xbox title on 1990s hardware.

The project requires the Nintendo 64 8MB Expansion Pack to run properly. Additionally, players must own a copy of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved to access the necessary game assets, and installation requires command-line familiarity. Despite these technical barriers, the working build demonstrates the port is progressing well.

The Halo-64 project exemplifies a growing trend of fans and enthusiasts adapting classic and modern games to retro hardware, enabled by advancing emulation, modding, and porting tools. While the complex setup process limits accessibility to technically inclined players, it represents a significant achievement in game preservation and demonstrates the gaming community’s commitment to extending the lifespan and reach of beloved titles across different platforms.
