League of Legends Classic will become a thing of the past in January 2027, though it may one day be resurrected as a limited-time event

Riot Games has announced that League of Legends Classic, a limited-time mode that recreated the MOBA’s earliest gameplay, will be permanently discontinued in January 2027. The mode launched in July 2026 and provided players with a nostalgic version of the game mirroring its early days.

Despite positive initial reception, Riot found that player interest in the classic mode didn’t sustain long enough to justify maintaining it as a permanent feature. Many players, after experiencing the retro version, returned to other modes and aspects of League of Legends.

The decision reflects a broader approach to game preservation in live-service titles. Unlike World of Warcraft, which maintains dedicated classic servers, Riot has determined that a rotating limited-time event model would better serve the player base. The studio hasn’t ruled out League of Legends Classic returning in the future, but only as a temporary event rather than a permanent fixture.

This move aligns with industry trends where developers balance nostalgia-driven content with active player engagement metrics. While classic modes can drive initial excitement, the challenge lies in maintaining sustained interest without cannibalizing the primary game experience. Riot’s decision suggests they’ll continue monitoring player feedback and may reintroduce the classic mode if there’s sufficient future demand through limited-time offerings.
