Riot Games has announced the end League of Legends Classic as an on-going mode, just three months after its release

Riot Games has announced that League of Legends Classic, a recreation of the MOBA in its earlier iteration, will be removed from the game at the end of the current season in January 2027. The mode launched in July 2026 but failed to maintain a sustained player base.

The decision comes just three months after the mode’s release. According to Riot’s official announcement, player engagement has waned significantly, with most players returning to other aspects of League of Legends. Rather than supporting the permanent addition, Riot has decided to take the classic mode offline but leave open the possibility of bringing it back as a limited-time event in the future.

The brief lifecycle of League of Legends Classic contrasts with similar nostalgia modes in other long-running games, such as World of Warcraft’s Classic servers, which have maintained stronger sustained interest. Riot’s decision reflects the challenge of maintaining permanent legacy versions alongside an actively developed live service game.

While the mode will disappear after January, Riot has not ruled out future iterations. If it does return, the studio plans to implement significant changes to the experience, though specific details about potential improvements remain unclear.
