Valve is toying with a Steam Frame OLED and some Reddit users are already wondering whether to wait an excruciatingly long time for it even though it may never happen

With the Steam Frame having just launched, speculation about an OLED variant is already circulating within the gaming community. Code-sleuths discovered references to “deckard-oled” and “deckard-plano” in the Steam Frame’s source code—deckard being Valve’s internal codename for the device—suggesting the company may be experimenting with alternative versions of the hardware.

The discovery has prompted some Reddit users to debate whether they should hold off on purchasing a Frame today and wait for a potential OLED model instead. However, the reality is considerably more speculative. The code references appear to represent nothing more than internal experimentation by Valve engineers, with the branches last updated in February and a few weeks ago respectively. Such snippets in source code often amount to exploratory work or prototyping that may never materialize into shipping products.

This situation highlights a recurring pattern in gaming communities where small technical hints are interpreted as confirmations of future hardware. While OLED versions of gaming devices have become increasingly common—as evidenced by successful precedents like the Nintendo Switch OLED model—jumping to conclusions about unannounced products based on nascent code branches is premature at best.

Valve has given no official indication of plans for an OLED Steam Frame, and code exploration should not be conflated with product commitment. Consumers contemplating a purchase should base their decision on the current hardware’s capabilities rather than speculative future variants that may never materialize.
