The rumoured Steam Frame OLED would fix one of the Frame’s minor weaknesses and do nothing for its major ones
Code found in Valve’s recently released Steam Frame kernel source references a potential OLED variant of the VR headset, internally codenamed ‘Planar.’ The discovery suggests this variant may not be an abandoned prototype, as related code branches received updates on October 2nd—weeks after the standard LCD-based Steam Frame began taking reservations. The rumored OLED version would feature a native resolution of 3,552×3,840 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, matching the specifications of Samsung’s Galaxy VR headset’s MicroOLED lenses. While the upgrade would represent an improvement in display technology, industry observers note the enhancement would address only one of the Steam Frame’s minor weaknesses, leaving its more significant limitations unresolved.
