Rockstar Officially Comments on GTA 6’s Approach to Trump & COVID-19
Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not directly address two significant recent American events: Donald Trump’s political rise and the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision represents a notable choice given the franchise’s long tradition of biting satire on contemporary culture.
According to Rockstar North studio head Rob N, the studio is avoiding these topics to prevent the game from ‘dating ourselves in a sort of awkward way.’ The developer fears that directly engaging with these polarizing, recent real-world events could make the game feel temporally locked to a specific moment in history.
The 13-year gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 has provided substantial material for social commentary, yet Rockstar has determined that selective restraint serves the game’s long-term vision better than comprehensive topical coverage. The decision reflects the studio’s broader approach to GTA 6 as a fantastical escape offering a distorted mirror of reality rather than direct historical documentation.
While the game will still contain satire and social commentary—core elements of the franchise—Rockstar is prioritizing timelessness and lasting appeal over immediate cultural relevance. This strategy suggests the publisher believes a game less tethered to specific recent events will remain engaging and relevant longer after its release.
