Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited less than two weeks after it was announced, due to “a ton” of player feedback
Jagex has cancelled RuneScape: Reignited, a newly-announced game mode, less than two weeks after its unveiling at RuneFest earlier this month. The swift cancellation came in response to substantial negative feedback from the game’s established player community.
RuneScape: Reignited was designed as a fresh-start option for new and returning players, featuring a completely separate in-game economy isolated from the main game. Accounts created for Reignited could only trade items with other Reignited players and were restricted from participating in raids and boss encounters with regular RuneScape accounts. The feature was intended to lower the barrier to entry for new players interested in joining the long-running MMORPG.
Despite these intentions, the announcement triggered immediate and substantial backlash from RuneScape’s community. Long-time players raised concerns about the proposed changes, generating what Jagex characterised as “a ton” of feedback. Rather than proceeding with the update, the studio decided to halt the project entirely.
The rapid reversal demonstrates the significant influence that established communities wield in live-service games, where sustained engagement from dedicated players forms the economic and social foundation. RuneScape’s particularly vocal and invested fanbase appears to carry considerable weight in development decisions.
