Mike Flanagan Explains Why Warhammer 40,000 Is a ‘Brutally Difficult Adaptation’

Director and showrunner Mike Flanagan has signed a multi-year deal with Amazon to develop original television series, marking a major shift from his previous work with Netflix on acclaimed horror productions including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Fall of the House of Usher.

Flanagan’s first project under the Amazon deal is an adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel Carrie, which recently premiered on Prime Video. However, the focus of renewed attention is his next venture: a television adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, which will anchor Henry Cavill’s broader Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe. Cavill, known for his role as Superman, is set to star in the series.

In discussing the Warhammer 40,000 project, Flanagan characterized the adaptation as “brutally difficult,” highlighting the significant creative and production challenges involved in translating the complex tabletop gaming universe to the screen. The source material, with its expansive lore, dark tone, and dedicated fanbase, presents substantial obstacles for adaptation.

Beyond these projects, Flanagan has additional work in development that many industry observers anticipate, including an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. Flanagan’s move to Amazon represents a notable shift in the streaming landscape and demonstrates the platform’s commitment to securing established creative talent for prestige television projects.
