Steam Achievements Overhaul Now Available in Beta

Valve has introduced Achievement Sets, a new feature now available in Steam Beta that fundamentally restructures how the platform handles achievements in games that receive post-launch content. The system addresses a longstanding pain point for completionists: DLC, expansions, and seasonal updates have traditionally added new achievements that prevent players from maintaining 100% completion status on their profiles, making the achievement list perpetually grow.

With Achievement Sets, developers can now compartmentalize achievements into distinct groups—separating base game achievements from those tied to DLC, expansions, seasons, or new game modes. This organizational structure allows players to achieve and maintain 100% completion for individual sets without losing their completion status when new content is added. For example, a player can complete the base game’s achievement set at 100%, and new DLC achievements appear as a separate set that doesn’t retroactively diminish that accomplishment.

Valve acknowledged in the update announcement that games today live longer than ever, with continuous updates extending their lifespan well beyond launch. Rather than letting this positive trend undermine players’ sense of achievement completion, the new system preserves that satisfaction while allowing developers to continue enriching their games with new content.

Currently rolling out in beta to a select set of games, Achievement Sets represents Valve’s response to similar industry trends—notably Xbox’s concurrent achievement system overhaul, which introduced Mythic Achievements. The feature is expected to improve the achievement tracking experience across Steam’s library as more developers adopt the new structure.
