Microsoft gives XBOX mode a more handheld-friendly Gaming Task View

Microsoft is rolling out an improved Gaming Task View for Xbox mode in Windows 11, addressing a longstanding usability issue where users became trapped within the gaming interface. The new feature, currently in testing among Windows Insiders, introduces quick shortcuts that allow seamless switching back to the Windows desktop and easy access to power settings without fully exiting Xbox mode.

Xbox mode is designed to provide a streamlined, console-like gaming experience on Windows PCs, but its self-contained environment has made navigation cumbersome for users who need to access desktop features or adjust system settings while gaming. The updated Gaming Task View resolves this friction point by enabling faster context switching between the gaming interface and Windows controls.

The feature is part of a broader batch of updates released by Microsoft across all Windows Insider channels. While the Xbox mode improvements serve as the headline feature, the company has also introduced other enhancements, including updates to Windows Hello authentication systems.

By testing these changes through the Windows Insider program, Microsoft can gather feedback from early adopters before a wider release. This iterative approach helps ensure the Gaming Task View meets user expectations and integrates smoothly with the existing Xbox mode experience. The update reflects Microsoft’s ongoing effort to refine the gaming experience on Windows 11, particularly for users who rely on Xbox mode for dedicated gaming sessions.
