D&D’s Arcana Unleashed Officially Fixes One of the Game’s Most Frustrating Problems
D&D’s latest supplement, Arcana Unleashed, officially addresses long-standing frustrations with the game’s intelligent weapon rules. The supplement fixes issues around dual-wielding magical weapons with conflicting alignment or virtue requirements.
The problem is illustrated through the example of Kellnor, a Barbarian attempting to wield two legendary weapons simultaneously: a demonic sword stolen from the Cult of Asmodeus, and Azuredge, a magical battleaxe inhabited by the spirit of Lady Lauroun, a legendary hero of Waterdeep. Azuredge functions similarly to Thor’s Mjolnir—it becomes impossibly heavy for unworthy wielders and can be thrown before returning to its owner.
However, Azuredge demands that its wielder remain virtuous, making it incompatible with the demonic sword, which Kellnor wanted to dual-wield. The demonic sword’s +2 bonus made it numerically superior, creating an impossible mechanical and roleplay conflict for the character build.
Arcana Unleashed’s revisions to intelligent weapon mechanics apparently resolve these types of contradictions, allowing players greater flexibility in character builds without forcing them into impossible choices between weapon compatibility and mechanical optimization.
