We Sat Down with D&D Game Designer James Wyatt to Talk Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft
Wizards of the Coast has announced a Dungeons & Dragons expansion based on Blizzard’s World of Warcraft universe, launching within the next month as the first entry in the “Universes Beyond” line. This initiative allows D&D to explore intellectual properties beyond its traditional Forgotten Realms setting.
In an interview at New York Comic Con, James Wyatt, principal game designer at Wizards of the Coast, addressed questions about the expansion’s design approach. Rather than attempting to translate World of Warcraft’s complex MMO mechanics to the tabletop format, the expansion is being developed as a traditional D&D experience set in Azeroth, the world of World of Warcraft. This design philosophy prioritizes core D&D gameplay mechanics and design principles while integrating WoW’s setting, characters, and lore, allowing players to experience Azeroth through tabletop role-playing.
The Universes Beyond initiative represents Wizards of the Coast’s strategy to expand D&D’s reach by collaborating with other major entertainment franchises and game worlds, bringing new audiences to the tabletop RPG while providing established D&D players with fresh settings and experiences.
