Funcom is laying off yet more developers as it pivots to supporting Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles

Funcom has announced a major restructuring that will result in layoffs at the company, with CEO Rui Casais set to depart once the reorganization is complete. The decision follows a strategic pivot whereby the studio will focus exclusively on supporting its existing survival RPGs: Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles.

According to CEO Casais, Dune: Awakening represented “the biggest project we have ever undertaken, requiring many years of significant development resources across our studios.” The shift in focus reflects the company’s transition from full production of new content to long-term post-launch development and operations—a change that requires a different organizational structure and skill set.

This restructuring represents another wave of layoffs in the gaming industry and highlights the challenges facing studios supporting live-service games. The move suggests Funcom will consolidate its efforts on maintaining and developing content for its two major survival titles rather than pursuing new project ventures. The departure of Casais indicates significant changes in leadership direction as the company adjusts to its new operational focus.
