Ghostwire: Tokyo joins GOG Preservation Program, which means you don’t have to deal with Bethesda.NET anymore

Ghostwire: Tokyo, the 2022 supernatural action-adventure developed by Tango Gameworks, has officially joined GOG’s Preservation Program. Although the game is relatively recent, the move highlights GOG’s commitment to long-term digital preservation and player ownership rights.

The primary benefit of the GOG release is the removal of Bethesda.NET integration, eliminating the mandatory online authentication requirement that previously accompanied the game. This shift allows players to own a version of Ghostwire: Tokyo that functions independently of Bethesda’s online services. The game originally shipped with Denuvo DRM protection, though this was removed shortly after launch.

GOG’s Preservation Program addresses a critical issue in modern gaming: the vulnerability of digital products tied to corporate-controlled online infrastructure. As publishers frequently maintain or discontinue online services at their discretion, player access to purchased games becomes uncertain. By offering DRM-free versions with services like Bethesda.NET removed, GOG ensures that games remain playable regardless of external platform decisions.

This initiative aligns with growing industry concerns about game preservation and digital ownership. The program protects players’ investments in purchased titles while supporting the principle that games should remain accessible long-term. Ghostwire: Tokyo’s inclusion demonstrates that preservation efforts extend to relatively recent releases, not just legacy titles.
