Steam’s Achievement Sets beta aims to stop new content breaking your completion status
Valve is beta testing Steam Achievement Sets, a new feature designed to help developers organize achievements into custom groupings while preventing new content from breaking players’ completion status.
As games increasingly receive post-launch content through DLC, expansions, and seasonal updates, developers have faced a persistent problem: newly added achievements can be difficult for players to discover and often invalidate the completion status of those who have already finished the core game. Steam Achievement Sets addresses this challenge by allowing developers to organize achievements into thematic collections tailored to their game’s specific structure and content roadmap.
The feature gives developers significant flexibility in categorization. Valve cited examples including grouping achievements by single-player versus multiplayer content, or organizing them around class-based systems with multiple separate set categories. This organizational approach helps maintain clarity for players while enabling developers to add new content without retroactively altering a game’s perceived completion state.
Currently in beta testing, the feature allows developers to experiment with different organizational schemes before a wider rollout. This initiative reflects Valve’s ongoing efforts to improve the Steam ecosystem for long-tail games that continue receiving updates well beyond their launch window, addressing a quality-of-life concern that has grown increasingly important as live-service and content-update models have become standard industry practice.
