The Best Transformers Movie That No One Watched Finds New Life on Streaming
The Transformers franchise has undergone significant changes following Michael Bay’s departure from the live-action series. Under Bay’s direction, Paramount built a billion-dollar franchise spanning five films that dominated the box office. However, after Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), the franchise struggled to maintain its commercial momentum.
The 2018 prequel Bumblebee briefly reversed this decline, becoming both a critical and commercial success—though it fell short of the billion-dollar heights of Bay’s earlier films. This resurgence was short-lived, as 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts failed to revitalize the franchise as Paramount had hoped.
In 2024, Paramount pivoted with the animated prequel Transformers One, an origin story exploring how Optimus Prime and Megatron became rivals. The film stands as one of the best-reviewed Transformers movies to date, though it disappointed at the box office and didn’t universally please franchise fans. Despite its theatrical underperformance, Transformers One is finding renewed success on streaming platforms, suggesting that animated storytelling and streaming-first distribution models may offer a viable path forward for the franchise where traditional theatrical releases have struggled.
