Samson dev Liquid Swords has reportedly gone bankrupt
Swedish game developer Liquid Swords has been declared bankrupt following an extended period of unpaid employee wages. A bankruptcy order was issued on October 12, affecting approximately 30 staff members who had not received salaries for at least two months. The employees themselves petitioned for the bankruptcy declaration.
Under Sweden’s state wage guarantee system, affected workers will receive compensation for their unpaid salaries, providing a financial safety net. The bankruptcy trustee is actively seeking a buyer for the studio.
Liquid Swords, founded in 2020 by Christofer Sundberg (known for co-founding Avalanche Studios and working on the Just Cause franchise), released its debut title Samson—an open-city crime simulation—on PC approximately six months before the financial collapse. The studio’s inability to sustain operations despite the game’s release suggests that post-launch revenue proved insufficient to cover ongoing costs and employee compensation.
The bankruptcy represents a significant setback for the independent gaming sector and highlights financial sustainability challenges within game development startups. The circumstances surrounding the extended payment failure point to serious operational and financial mismanagement at the studio level.
