RocketWerkz’ C# framework ‘BRUTAL’ is now available to all developers

RocketWerkz, the developer behind titles like Icarus and Kitten Space Agency, has released BRUTAL, an open-source C# game development framework developed in collaboration with game platform operator Ahwoo. Founded by DayZ veteran Dean Hall, both companies aim to provide developers with an alternative to established engines like Unity, Unreal Engine, and Godot.

BRUTAL combines C# and .NET technologies with C++ libraries and provides low-level graphics access, allowing developers to maintain direct control over their game’s codebase and development tools. Rather than relying on third-party engines, developers can build and maintain their own customized development infrastructure, offering greater autonomy in the development process.

The open-source release reflects a growing trend among developers seeking alternatives to established game engines, particularly following high-profile controversies within the industry. The announcement arrives in the wake of Unity’s widely criticized Runtime Fee policy, which sparked substantial backlash from the developer community. That controversy highlighted developer frustrations with engine monetization models and restrictive terms of service.

BRUTAL provides another option for studios seeking greater control over their development pipeline and avoiding dependency on major engine providers’ policies and fee structures.
