Moonlighter dev delays Steam playtest for its “Tower Defensevania” ReVamp over concerns that AI copycats might clone it before launch

Digital Sun Games, developer of the acclaimed indie roguelike Moonlighter, has delayed its planned public Steam playtest for its upcoming “Tower Defensevania” roguelike ReVamp due to concerns about AI-powered game cloning. The studio was originally scheduled to host a public playtest in late October but has pivoted to a more limited Discord-based playtest instead, with the broader public build coming later ahead of the game’s planned March release.

The decision reflects a growing industry concern about generative AI tools being used to reverse-engineer and clone unreleased or existing games before the originals even launch. According to Digital Sun’s marketing manager Israel Mallén, “with launch still months away, sharing a build with tens of thousands of players feels like too big a risk.” The developer emphasized they are not alone in these concerns, noting that many studios are reassessing their testing and release strategies in light of the trend.

This comes amid a recent surge in rapidly created AI-cloned games appearing on Steam, Roblox, and mobile app stores, intensified by advances in AI technology that make reverse-engineering game mechanics increasingly feasible. Rather than abandon community feedback entirely, Digital Sun is taking a more cautious approach by limiting Discord access, allowing for valuable player input while reducing cloning risks. The studio is also calling on gaming platforms to strengthen protections for original work, signaling that AI-driven cloning has become a significant concern for the broader development community.
