Windows 11’s Hybrid Intelligence features will breathe new life into NPUs
Microsoft is introducing “Hybrid Intelligence,” a new suite of AI capabilities designed to revitalize Copilot+ PCs on Windows 11. This initiative represents a significant pivot following the disappointing launch of Copilot+ PCs in 2024, which led Microsoft to retire the brand as a marketing asset in 2026.
The Hybrid Intelligence approach addresses a fundamental limitation of the original Copilot+ PC vision by enabling AI features to run intelligently across both device and cloud resources. Rather than relying solely on Neural Processing Units (NPUs) for on-device AI processing, the new system dynamically leverages cloud computing when beneficial, creating a more flexible and capable AI experience.
The shift suggests Microsoft’s acknowledgment that pure on-device processing alone cannot fulfill the promise of advanced AI capabilities. By combining NPU-powered local processing with cloud resources, the company aims to deliver practical AI features that can scale based on task complexity and resource availability. This represents a meaningful evolution in how Microsoft approaches AI integration within Windows 11, moving away from the hardware-centric marketing strategy that characterized Copilot+ PCs and toward a more pragmatic hybrid model.
