Modern Warfare 4 Pays Tribute to Call of Duty Co-Creator Vince Zampella

Vince Zampella, the legendary co-creator of Call of Duty and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, tragically passed away in a car accident last December. This week’s release of Modern Warfare 4 marks the latest chapter in a franchise that Zampella helped establish nearly 20 years ago when he led the inception of Call of Duty in 2007.

To honor his contributions to the gaming industry, developer Infinity Ward—Zampella’s former studio—has included a tribute to him in the campaign credits of Modern Warfare 4. The tribute appears upon completion of the game’s final mission.

Zampella’s impact on first-person shooters and video games cannot be overstated. His work shaped the direction of the industry, particularly through his pioneering work on the Call of Duty franchise during his tenure through 2009. Beyond Call of Duty, Zampella went on to found Respawn Entertainment and eventually became an EA executive, where he oversaw the Battlefield series at the time of his death.

Modern Warfare 4 serves as both a continuation of the franchise Zampella helped create and a fitting tribute to his lasting legacy in gaming. The decision by Infinity Ward to honor him in the game’s credits reflects the profound influence he had on the studio and the broader first-person shooter genre.
