Modder Uses AI to Put Shadow of War’s Nemesis System in Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2

A Red Dead Redemption 2 mod called enRAGE brings the beloved Nemesis System from Middle-earth: Shadow of War to Rockstar’s open-world Western. Created by modder nicklovin99, the mod tracks how individual NPCs feel about the player, creating dynamic rivalries and personal vendettas that evolve over time.

The system names every NPC in the game and organizes them by gang affiliation, including groups like the O’Driscoll Boys, Lemoyne Raiders, the U.S. Army, the Wapiti people, the Bronte Family, the Murfee Brood, the Skinner Brothers, and the Van der Linde gang, plus unaffiliated NPCs. As players interact with these enemies, the mod creates a memory system where NPCs remember encounters, develop personal grudges, and actively pursue revenge against Arthur Morgan.

The Nemesis System originally debuted in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and gained significant popularity for its dynamic enemy behavior, transforming random encounters into compelling personal conflicts. However, the technology has remained largely exclusive to the Middle-earth games. In 2021, Warner Bros. patented the Nemesis System concept, which limited other developers’ ability to implement similar mechanics in their own games.

The enRAGE mod represents a creative solution that brings comparable functionality to Red Dead Redemption 2 through player-created modifications. The mod is available on PC and demonstrates how the modding community continues to expand game capabilities by implementing systems from other titles.
