Sony Patents “Generation Super Sampling” - Next-Gen Frame Generation with Controller Inputs, Perfect for PS6?

Sony has filed a new US patent (US20250209568A1) for a technology called “Generation Super Sampling,” which details an advanced frame generation technique that could be a key feature for the company’s next-generation PlayStation console. The patent describes a method that optionally incorporates player controller inputs into its prediction model, allowing for more accurate generated frames while reducing frame-to-frame latency.

Unlike Sony’s current PSSR (PlayStation Super Sampling Resolution) technology, which focuses only on super sampling, this new patented technique works similarly to frame generation technologies developed by AMD, Intel, and Nvidia—taking existing frames and interpolating generated frames between them to improve visual smoothness.

The significance of including player inputs in the frame generation model is notable. By analyzing controller inputs as part of its prediction process, the technology could deliver more responsive and accurate frame generation, potentially addressing input latency concerns. This could make the technology valuable for competitive or action-heavy games.

This patent filing aligns with previous statements from Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead system architect, who confirmed that frame generation will be a feature in PlayStation’s future. While the patent doesn’t explicitly confirm this technology is destined for PlayStation 6, the timing and nature suggest it represents part of Sony’s strategy for next-generation console graphics.
