UKIE partners with Sheridans on AI Compliance and Accreditation Service to guide UK studios in using AI lawfully and responsibly
The UK games industry body UKIE has partnered with law firm Sheridans to launch an AI Compliance and Accreditation Service, designed to help studios navigate the complex landscape of using artificial intelligence lawfully and responsibly.
The service provides a structured four-step process that guides game development studios through AI compliance requirements. Upon completion, companies receive the UKIE Certification Mark, a badge they can display during investor pitches and funding rounds to demonstrate their adherence to responsible AI practices and due diligence.
According to UKIE CEO Nick Poole, the initiative addresses the challenge facing the games industry as AI technology rapidly evolves. The service offers what Poole describes as “a practical route through what is a fast moving” landscape, helping businesses understand how to implement AI tools and practices within legal and ethical frameworks.
This partnership reflects growing industry attention to AI governance and compliance. As generative AI and machine learning tools become increasingly prevalent in game development—from asset creation to design assistance—studios face questions about intellectual property, worker impact, and ethical use. The UKIE certification program aims to provide clarity and structure around these concerns.
The certification mark serves as a credible signal to investors and stakeholders that a studio has undertaken proper due diligence in its AI implementation. This could become valuable as funding bodies and publishers increasingly scrutinize AI practices as part of their investment criteria.
