XBOX Manager Who Openly Adored AI Deletes Social Media Profile After Backlash
Brandon Stirrup, a Senior Business Strategy Manager at Xbox, sparked significant controversy this week after posting on social media about the gaming industry’s use of artificial intelligence. Stirrup argued that gaming is the only industry where leaders are afraid to openly discuss AI adoption, claiming that the industry is “pretending not to use AI.”
In his posts, Stirrup stated that developers and studios who don’t embrace AI “should not be in the business of being a business.” He also shared his experience creating what he called a “bad but improvable game” using AI over a weekend, with only about three hours of active development time—claiming anyone can build a game with AI tools.
Stirrup expressed willingness to face professional consequences for his statements, suggesting he might be fired for publicly revealing that Xbox uses AI. However, the backlash on social media was swift and substantial, with large volumes of critical replies flooding his posts.
Due to the intensity of the negative response, Stirrup deleted his X account within 24 hours of initiating the conversation. A source at Xbox confirmed that Stirrup deactivated his account because of the overwhelming volume of replies he was receiving.
The controversy highlights the gaming industry’s apparent reluctance to openly discuss AI integration in game development, despite what Stirrup characterizes as widespread adoption. This incident comes as Microsoft moves forward with AI initiatives, including Xbox Labs—an experimental division focused on turning emerging ideas into new gaming experiences, though the official announcement notably avoided explicitly mentioning AI.
The incident underscores growing tension within the gaming community between those who see AI as essential for industry evolution and those concerned about its impact on game development practices and human creativity.
