AMD Announces FSR 4.1 for Xbox Series X/S, Z2 Extreme and Z2A Handhelds, RX 6000 GPUs and More
AMD has announced that its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, as well as handheld gaming devices including the ROG Ally X and ASUS ROG Z2 Extreme handhelds. The announcement fulfills earlier promises from AMD about expanding FSR 4’s availability beyond its original exclusive release on Radeon 7000 and 9000 series graphics cards.
FSR 4.1 is an AI-powered image upscaling technology that renders games at a lower resolution and then uses machine learning to reconstruct sharper, higher-resolution images. This approach reduces computational load on hardware while maintaining visual quality, freeing up performance for higher frame rates. The technology will also expand to older RX 6000-series GPUs, Ryzen AI processors, and select laptops, with support for Vulkan games being added.
The expansion marks AMD’s competitive response to Sony’s recent focus on upscaling technology, particularly the PS5 Pro’s QSSR system. FSR 4.1’s arrival on Xbox consoles and handhelds represents a significant step toward making advanced upscaling technology more widely available across gaming platforms. AMD’s ongoing partnerships with both console manufacturers and handheld makers position FSR as a key competitive alternative in an increasingly performance-focused gaming landscape.
