‘Haven’t Played Your Console in a While?’ Trade It in, Xbox Tells Customers Amid Stock Shortages
Xbox is attempting to address severe hardware stock shortages by emailing customers who haven’t recently used their Xbox Series X or S consoles, encouraging them to trade in their systems. The initiative reflects an unprecedented crisis in console hardware availability and pricing.
The shortage stems from what industry observers call the “RAMpocalypse”—a dramatic surge in RAM demand driven by major AI companies including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and Microsoft. These organizations are aggressively acquiring memory components to power their AI infrastructure, leaving consumer electronics manufacturers competing for increasingly scarce and expensive supplies. Gaming consoles have been hit particularly hard, with RAM costs skyrocketing to historically high levels.
The impact is industry-wide. Circana analysis reveals Xbox hardware sales have reached their lowest point ever, with PlayStation experiencing its worst hardware sell-through performance since 2013. Nintendo is similarly affected. Console prices have ballooned to unprecedented levels as manufacturers struggle to source components.
The AI-driven resource competition has effectively relegated gaming consoles to the margins of the electronics market. With AI infrastructure projects consuming the majority of available high-performance RAM, traditional consumer hardware has become a “niche” market scenario.
Xbox’s trade-in campaign represents a practical response to inventory challenges—recirculating used hardware to meet customer demand while AI companies continue monopolizing new component supplies. The situation highlights a broader tension in the tech industry: the competition between consumer-facing products and the infrastructure demands of emerging AI technologies is reshaping hardware availability and affordability across multiple sectors.
