Sensor Tower data shows the yawning gap between GTA 6 and everything else
Analytics firm Sensor Tower has released pre-order data demonstrating that Grand Theft Auto 6 is significantly outpacing some of the biggest AAA releases of the past six years. The data reveals that GTA 6 pre-orders are pacing 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) over a comparable period before launch—MW2 itself was one of the most successful recent launches in terms of digital pre-orders.
The Sensor Tower analysis compared GTA 6 against several blockbuster titles including Diablo 4 (2023), Hogwarts Legacy (2023), and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023), with GTA 6 significantly outperforming all of them. The comparison is based on digital pre-order data in the US only.
According to the same data, GTA 6 has already generated over $630 million in pre-order revenue, with 6.45 million copies pre-ordered ahead of its November launch. PlayStation 5 dominates the pre-order breakdown, accounting for 74% of all pre-orders—a disparity that aligns with the PS5’s broader market dominance, having outsold Xbox Series consoles by approximately a 3-to-1 margin.
The pre-order figures suggest GTA 6 is set for a historic commercial launch. The sheer volume of pre-orders—exceeding $600 million in revenue before the game has even released—has already surpassed the lifetime sales figures of many AAA titles, cementing Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise as a commercial juggernaut.
