Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Officially Adds a New Way to Lose the Game
Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Star Trek Universes Beyond set is introducing a brand-new way to lose a game, drawing inspiration from one of the Star Trek franchise’s most iconic scenarios. The new loss condition is based on the Kobayashi Maru scene from director Nicholas Meyer’s 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where Admiral Kirk oversees a Starfleet training exercise involving the USS Enterprise attempting to rescue the crew of the Kobayashi Maru. The scenario is designed to be unwinnable—no matter what decisions the crew makes, the mission ends in failure.
While Magic: The Gathering traditionally ends when a player’s life total drops to zero, the game has long supported alternative victory and defeat conditions through various card mechanics. Players have been able to win by depleting their opponent’s deck, accumulating poison counters, or by fulfilling specific win conditions of cards like Simic Ascendancy or Doctor Doom, Unrivaled. The Star Trek crossover set continues this tradition by adding a Kobayashi Maru-themed loss condition to the game’s expanding ruleset.
This marks another example of how Magic: The Gathering integrates intellectual property from other franchises through its Universes Beyond sets, allowing players to experience these crossover stories through new and thematic game mechanics.
