Microsoft wants Edge to install security updates without restarting

Microsoft is exploring a way to update its Edge browser without requiring a system restart, seeking to balance security with user productivity. Currently, browser updates mandate a restart to safely deploy new versions, which interrupts work and often causes users to delay installing patches.

The company’s prototype would enable background updates while keeping compatible tabs open, allowing users to continue working uninterrupted. This approach addresses a persistent friction point in browser security: while timely updates protect users from vulnerabilities, the restart requirement discourages adoption. By making updates seamless and background-driven, Microsoft aims to ensure users stay secure without sacrificing their workflow.

The feature remains in early experimental stages and has not been integrated into Edge’s production code or the underlying Chromium project. It is not available to users today and should be considered a research initiative rather than a confirmed upcoming feature.
