Here Are The Mechanics and Dozens Of New Cards From Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek Set

Wizards of the Coast has officially revealed Magic: The Gathering’s final expansion of 2026: a Star Trek-themed Universes Beyond set launching in November.

The set introduces seven new mechanics to the game, including two mechanics designed exclusively for the preconstructed Commander decks. This marks a significant moment for Commander format, as it’s the first time new keyworded mechanics have been introduced to preconstructed Commander decks since Eminence debuted in Commander 2017. Commander-specific mechanics hadn’t appeared in the annual deck releases since Wizards ended their dedicated Commander series in 2019.

Among the new mechanics is Battlefront, featured in the Klingon Fury Commander deck. This aggressive mechanic triggers based on the number of opponents the player attacked during a turn, adding a new dimension to multi-player strategy. The Star Trek set also includes special premium treatments, with seven cards featuring signatures from the people depicted in the artwork.

The Star Trek Universes Beyond set represents the culmination of 2026’s diverse lineup of crossover expansions, following sets based on alternate realities, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, superheroes, and The Lord of the Rings. The set includes dozens of new cards across both the main set and the Commander deck offerings, giving players substantial new options for deck construction, with the preconstructed decks serving as a major focus of this release.
