Overwatch’s director discusses why King’s Row is so iconic, but admits that ’every single map in the game gets a vote'

Overwatch’s lead developer Aaron Keller has outlined what makes King’s Row the community’s most beloved map in the game. Since Team 4 added map voting to Overwatch, King’s Row has consistently emerged as the clear fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why.

According to Keller, the map’s appeal lies in its balanced design. Unlike many other maps in Overwatch, King’s Row succeeds equally well in both attack and defense modes, avoiding the typical weighted advantage that favors one side. The map features elevated terrain and positioning options—what Keller describes as “high ground there, but there’s not oppressive high ground.” This balance ensures that the map remains competitive and engaging regardless of which team is attacking or defending.

The addition of map voting has revealed clear player preferences, with King’s Row consistently winning when presented as an option. Keller’s comments suggest that while the development team respects all maps in the game’s rotation and each receives consideration during design discussions, King’s Row has achieved a special status among players through its thoughtful layout and mechanical balance.
